In the past the Cold Spring Harbor Symposium on Quantitative Biology has focused largely on the nucleus and elements of the genetic apparatus. This year, we are grateful to the organizers, Drs. J. D. Watson and Güenter Albrecht-Buehler, for their courage and vision in selecting the topic of “Organization of the Cytoplasm.” To my knowledge, this is the first major symposium in the 20th century to embrace the topic of cytoplasm as a holistic entity. Indeed, research on the molecular biology and ultrastructure of cytoplasm, especially the cytoskeleton, has accelerated rapidly during recent years, resulting in the accumulation of a large reservoir of exciting new information. Therefore, a symposium of this magnitude is timely, if not overdue.
The study of cytoplasmic organization encompasses a large number of biologic disciplines; the task of accurately summarizing the presentations was surpassed only by the complexity of the subject itself. Whenever possible, I have...
