Reoviruses have been isolated from a variety of mammals and birds including monkeys, cattle, dogs, mice, and chickens. In spite of their widespread distribution and their recovery from children ill with diarrhea and mild respiratory disease, the

Both preparations were stained with 1% phosphotungstic acid pH 7 and examined in a A.E.I.-EM6B electron microscope. The magnification is the same for both. Note that the structural arrangement of the outer and inner shells of reovirions differs greatly. The outer shell is clearly an array of relatively few large capsomeres; the inner shell consists of far smaller subunits. Cores exhibit regularly spaced projections, the polypeptide constitution of which is not known. (From Smith et al., 1969.)...
