The development of multicellular organisms from a fertilized egg to differentiated tissues is what distinguishes the higher organisms from most unicellular organisms. This differentiation is under genetic control and in many developing systems the role of hormone in regulation of differentiation is well established. In insects growth and differentiation are regulated mainly by two hormones: ecdysone, the growth and differentiating hormone, and juvenile hormone which is responsible for the immature insect molts.

Previous experiments in vivo with Tenebrio molitor pupae using actinomycin D (Ilan, Ilan, and Quastel, 1966) suggested that in the pupa at least part of the messenger RNA (mRNA) for adult cuticular protein is present on the first day of pupation and translated five to seven days later.
